Industry Service Award

Tuesday Evening
57th Annual Industry Service Award
Jim Dressel

Jim Dressel Jim Dressel, executive editor of the oldest sports magazine in the United States, has tackled the big sport and industry issues in Bowlers Journal International for 35 years. He strives to present the legitimate news, report on all sides of a story, and, when feasible, do it all with a touch of humor, especially when he tweaks the noses of industry leaders... and, himself. Perhaps that’s why he’s being presented with the 2010 Industry Service Award by the Billiard & Bowling Institute of America.

Dressel has been with BJI dating back to the days when it was still known as Bowlers Journal & Billiards Revue and published by Mort Luby Jr. Today, the magazine is owned by Keith Hamilton and Mike Panozzo, and is the flagship magazine of the Luby Publishing triad, which also includes Bowling Center Magazine — BPAA’s official publication — and Billiards Digest.

Dressel originally got into journalism as editor of the New Jersey-based Kegler Publications in 1967. He majored in mathematics in college, but he showed Kegler publisher Norm Edelman a writing flair, and turned his back on the actuarial sciences to begin his new career. Sandwiched between two Kegler tours-of-duty was an almost two-year stint as manager of a pair of Philadelphia-area bowling centers. It was that experience which would come in handy many times in his work for BJI.

Over the years, Dressel has won more than 35 writing awards from the USBC and PBA combined and has been in the business long enough to witness most of the sea changes. He helped found the Mid-America Bowling Writers and served as its first President. He also was President of the Bowling Writers Association of America in 1994. He has interviewed almost every industry leader over the years at least once, and isn’t afraid to ask the hardball questions.

Three of his proudest moments: winning the bowling writers’ Mort Luby Sr. Hall of Fame Award in 1997, the BPAA’s 1999 V.A. Wapensky Award and the 2004 Joe Richards Hall of Fame Award from the Met N.Y. Bowling Writers.
